Three Ways to Apply to College:

 

1. College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC)

CFNC includes applications for every community college, two-year college in North Carolina, and every four-year college in North Carolina that is not on the Common App. 

Create an account and begin applying on cfnc.org.  Don't forget to write down and keep your password!

CFNC allows you to send transcripts with the click of a button either on the application or through the transcript manager tool.  Please make use of CFNC for transcripts - it's very easy!

2. Common Application (Common App):                                 

The Common Application is an undergraduate college admission application that you may use to apply to any of the member colleges and universities in 47 states and the District of Columbia.

North Carolina Colleges on the Common App: Davidson, Duke, Guilford, High Point, Johnson and Wales, Meredith, NC State, Queens, Salem, UNC Asheville, UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Wilmington, Wake Forest and Warren Wilson.

The Common App includes a general portion that goes to every college you apply to on the Common App, as well as a supplemental portion that varies with each individual college.

Create an account and begin applying on commonapp.org.  Don't forget to write down and keep your password!

3. Individual College Admissions Websites:

Use individual college admissions websites for out-of-state colleges that are not on the Common App.

Some North Carolina four-year colleges, such as UNC Charlotte and East Carolina University, may prefer applications through their admissions websites.

Application Fees:

All community college applications are free.

If you are in AVID, or qualify for free/reduced lunch, you qualify for application fee waivers for free applications!  Speak to your guidance counselor or Mr. Stevenson to get a fee waiver.

If you do not qualify for a fee waiver, college applications cost between $25-$80 per application.  

Deadlines:

Early Decision:  Competitive colleges, such as Duke University, Davidson College, Meredith College and The University of Virginia, offer a binding decision. This application option offers higher admissions chances, but you are contractually obligated to attend the university if you are accepted. Application deadlines are typically between Oct. 15-Nov.15, and admissions decisions typically come between Dec. 15-Jan. 15.

Early Action: This is the application option most four-year colleges offer in the Fall, and it is non-binding.  Application deadlines are typically between Oct. 15-Dec.1, and admissions decisions typically come between Dec. 15-Jan. 31.  Some colleges exclusively award merit-based scholarships to early action applicants.

Regular Decision: This is the application option most four-year colleges offer in the Winter, and it is non-binding. Application deadlines are typically between Jan. 1-March 15, and admissions decisions typically come between late March and early April.

Rolling Admissions: Less competitive four-year colleges may allow applications through the end of the school year, or even through the Summer before enrollment. 

Community College: There is no deadline to apply to community college for the following Fall.

Additional information about transcript requests, essays, recommendations, college options, and any other information will be covered in your Senior meetings.  Don't be afraid to ask!
